Wreck Fishing Off Miami Beach, FL - January 2019

Date: 2019-01-17

Miami Charter Fishing|Family fishing Half day trip this morning with the Father and Son team of Joseph and William. You couldn't ask for a more beautiful day. We started the day with trolling the planers for about 20 minutes. Action with the planers has been very scarce for the past few trips. Today was no exception. We had a south current to go along with the NW wind. Set up to drop on a wreck. It didn't take very long before the rod bent over and William and his Dad tag teamed the fish. Unfortunately we thought the hook pulled until we saw there was no hook. New hook and another drop. Quick hookup and this time we caught and released an amberjack. Third drop and another amberjack. Fourth drop and yet another amberjack. Fifth drop and this time it turned out to be a black grouper. To change things up a bit, we set up a drift with flatlines, downrigger, and bottom rod. It took a while, however, the bottom rod hooked up and we caught and released an Atlantic Sharp Nosed Shark. Went back to dropping on a different wreck and got shamed by an unknown fish that got us back in the wreck. Re-rigged and dropped down again. The south current pushed us past a second wreck with no action. It was close to the end of the trip and we had just enough time for one more drop. Another hookup. This time it was a real tug of war. We gained some line, the fish took it back. We gained again and the fish took it back. Slowly we gained the advantage and won. A much bigger amberjack was our reward. It was a good way to end the trip. On the way in we saw a manatee in the canal and the seawalls had numerous iguanas sunbathing.
